Destiny & Chrome

We’ve received questions about Destiny and Chrome recently. There is no sound in circulation module when using Chrome. One library discovered that barcodes printed in Chrome didn’t work well. You'll find that some databases set up in One Search won't display when using Chrome. Follett recommends using Internet Explorer, Mozilla Firefox or Safari.

The Library

Jonathan Glancy wrote an article for BBC Culture "Temples of books: The world’s most beautiful libraries".
http://www.bbc.com/culture/story/20131113-the-most-spectacular-libraries. The slide show at the link shows beautiful libraries around the world.
He mentions a new book The Library by James W. P. Campbell & Will Pryce published last month.

Records for Five Systems

Records are being collected for Five Systems at this time. If you have any reason to postpone collection, please notify the Library Automation Team. We exclude bookrooms and classroom sets. These are not considered library materials and are not suitable for inter-library loan. We do NOT collect any non-book materials like kits or videos.

A week away...

Follett online hosted products and services, as well as certain websites will be unavailable from Thursday, November 28th through Saturday, November 30th (coinciding with the U.S. Thanksgiving holiday weekend) while they relocate servers to a new facility.
This outage will affect Web Path Express, One Search, Follett Shelf eBooks, and Title Wave.

World Book is working in One Search!

One Search now delivers results from World Book. YaY! It is fixed. Unfortunately, Follett is struggling with the Proquest database provided by NOVEL NY "eLibrary Elementary". Results do not display, although the pass-through does take you to the database. No fun having to search all over again. They are working on it!
The Library Automation Team is off to lovely Leroy on Tuesday to spend time with our fellow S.L.A.P. members. That's School Library Automation Personnel. We'll work with Genesee Valley, Erie 1, Monroe 1, and Wayne Finger Lakes. We rarely get to collaborate with other BOCES about library automation so we will take advantage of this time to share and learn.

Friday Fun: Blind Date with a Book

Librarian Janet Clarke-Hazlett had books wrapped in plain brown paper and tagged with words. Students were encouraged to have a “blind date with a book”. After all, you can’t judge a book by its cover! Janet said the promotion had books being checked out in record numbers. She will be rewarded with a big tote bag from Baker + Taylor.
If you have a cool project to share - this is the place!

Destiny Homepage

Wouldn’t it be nice if your Destiny Home Page was a true 24/7 landing page for your students with all your library resources beautifully displayed? Well, now it can be. If you have a district library page or other site where you maintain all your library resources, we will show you how to embed that site so Destiny becomes a comprehensive virtual library that will meet the information needs of today’s students. Don’t have an existing site? We can offer ways to create a dynamic web page using Web 2.0 tools that will allow you to showcase your library program and its resources.

Sign up TODAY for the workshop tomorrow! Thursday, October 24th at 3:45 in Lab A at the CaTS building. Reply to this email or contact Patti Rose to enroll.

 Stone TP? Ewwwwww.

How’s One Search working?

The new NovelNY databases were added to your Destiny One Search. Well…except for the Gannett Newspapers. Destiny doesn’t like that one...

For elementary and middle school libraries, Kids InfoBits (Gale) and eLibrary Elementary (Proquest) were added to the already configured Grolier databases. The Grolier ones are Amazing Animals, America the Beautiful, Encyclopedia Americana, Multimedia Encyclopedia, Lands & People, New Book of Knowledge, New Book of Popular Science, and La Nueva Enclopedia Cumbre.
High schools had Opposing Viewpoints in Context added from NOVELNY. Gale provided the nicely priced bundle of Biography in Context, Science in Context, U.S. History in Context and World History in Context. These are also set up in Destiny One Search.

If you’d like to learn about  NOVELNY databases come to an afterschool workshop this Thursday (10/17/13) at 3:45 at CaTS. Please reply to this email or contact Patti Rose to enroll.

Altered Book Project

Susan Kagel, art teacher at Churchville Middle School North took recycling to a new level. The project had students research a “place” and type a one page paper.  Then they had to create an altered book on their chosen place and write an accompanying artist statement about their project. The books they altered were books removed from the library collection.  The projects are displayed in the library.  Thanks to Susan Kagel and Susan Meck for sharing this project. They will each receive a copy of the Reuse, Recycle, Read poster.

Fed Gov shutdown affecting Destiny One Search + WebPath Express Results

Due to the Government shutdown, Destiny has a few  translators that are already  affected. This will affect One Search and the results displayed when adding a title to your catalog since LOC is programmed into your  Z39.50 results.

Library of Congress
 NASA
 ERIC

There are a few more government sites likely to be affected, but as of now they are returning results in One Search.  However, this could change in the next several hours or overnight

Please also note that any government websites in WebPath Express will likely be affected.  After the  nightly checker tonight, we will have a better idea of the number of affected websites in WebPath Express in the morning.

October means BEDS statistics

Here's a video about getting BEDS information from Destiny - print materials. Jim sent information about eBooks and databases in his latest Weekly Update.

End of year TO DO list for Destiny

Before librarians and staff leave for the summer, there are library automation tasks to complete.
  • Turn off any automated email notices going to staff or students.
  • Holds & Reserves - Decide if you need to delete them or leave active for the start of the next school year.
  • Please inform the Library Automation Team if the library will be open and/or circulating during the summer. This allows maintenance and upgrades to be scheduled when it will not interrupt library operations.
  • Generate the needed reports for statistical information.
You can find more information here:

End of Year - Reporting

Some libraries want to submit reports to their administrators with statistical information at the end of the school year. Here are some ideas:

To find the number of items added to the collection during the school year: Reports>Library>Title & Copy list. Choose from the dropdown choices: ‘Date Copies Added’, ‘After the Date’. You can choose to display the report in XL format or as a PDF.

To find the items deleted/weeded: Reports>Library Reports> Weeding Log. Select the date ranges needed; by month, school year, calendar year.

Circulation statistics. Circulation>Library Information. Choose a date range.

BEDS information: Reports>Library Reports>Statistics>Collection Statistics Summary

If you'd like more information or have questions about reporting features in Destiny, do not hesitate to contact the Library Automation Team.

End of Year - Ceiling Date

It's May!
Back Office>Library Policies. Click the edit icon to change Ceiling Date. Once you go PAST that date, Destiny reverts to regular check out!

Trial STEM databases in OneSearch until March 31

This trial will be accessible until March 31st. Videos, Literacy and Student Products.

Follett has assured us that the trials from FactCite and ABDO publishing will be removed over the weekend - March 9-10.  If they are not,  the Library Automation Team will remove them on Monday morning. They no longer work since the trial ended on March 7th. If you are interested in providing Follett feedback about the databases,  let us know. We will forward the email that links to their survey.

Some love from Follett...

OneSearch has trial database from Follett set up. This promotion lasts until March 7. Not so great because of your break week coming up, but please take a look and offer feedback. I've heard positive things about a couple of them from elementary librarians. What do you think?

·         FactCite from the Lincoln Library Online

·         From ABDO Publishing:

1.       Inside the NFL

2.       Inside MLB

3.       The United States Presidents

4.       The United States

I think we will see more of these promotions from Follett. One concern is removal of these pass-throughs once the trial period ends. We’ll be checking them on March 8th!

Share the love...

Vote for Quest Library in the Follett Challenge!

You can vote once a day throughout March 15th by using this link.  http://www.follettchallenge.com/video.cfm?id=372. When you vote, a verification email will be sent. You'll need to open the verification email, then click on the link to confirm your vote for one of our local schools! It went to my Junk Mail folder so please check there if it doesn't appear in the inbox.
30% of their score is based on how many votes they receive so please share some love with Quest.
