Shelf Markers for Kids

Bernabi Library in Spencerport uses paint stirrers for student shelf markers. The students’ barcode labels are put on the sticks then the kids personalize them with markers. My question for Pamela Bigsby the librarian, “What do you do if they start whacking one another with them?”  Her reply was the offenders miss some of their book borrowing time – return to their table and sit.  She stated the rules clearly and has had no ‘swordplay’ in the library. The students take ownership of their decorated shelf makers and return them to the colorful wastebasket at the circ desk when they are done.   Pamela said the sticks have streamlined the check-out process for her classes.

Order in the Library Flash Game

This post has nothing to do with Destiny. A game for sorting and shelving books is linked below. Users enter a first and last name then pick an animal avatar. It is juvenile...and fun!
When you click on the link you will be taken to the Way Back Machine website. Just click on the "Impatient?" icon  and you'll be directed to the game.

Destiny Digital Resources - new partner for Lesson Plans

In your Destiny catalog, the Digital Resource tab has Curriki configured. Results can be viewed by logged- in teachers because Curriki is a collection of lesson plans. Keyword searches works best. Please be aware that results load a little slower under the Digital Resources tab than books and websites in Destiny. Your patience will be rewarded with hundreds of lesson plans. FYI, curriki works with Academic Benchmarks for standards correlation.
Let us know what your teachers think of this new partnership with Destiny.

Request multiple copies in Five Systems!

Multiple copies can be ordered by using the Request & Repeat button at the bottom of the page. This button will submit your request and reload the request page. When the request page is reloaded, the two note fields will maintain their values from the previous page but will be editable. The schools that you have already requested from will be removed from the list.

Here's a few tips from users Lisa Osur and Mary Anne Walker. Put the borrowers name in your 'notes' area. When you send the book back, put the date shipped and the barcode in the lenders note area. The lending library will know the book is on it's way back. All your data will be right there in Five Systems!
When you put the title into Destiny in Circulation (as a temp record) type the title in ALL CAPS and you can even note the lending library or books condition in the Author area.
New instructions, including step-by-step Destiny ones, have been updated here.

Want a Five Systems widget for a webpage? Just ask and it will be sent to you via email.

Tune-up your teacher records

Welcome Back!
Staff patron records are handled differently than student data. For most districts, it is the library's responsibility to update teacher information. This brief video (under 5 minutes) will help.

Tips from the trenches for INVENTORY

  • Are your eyes tired from scanning barcode uploads in Job Manager?
Try using the “Find” keyboard command to save your precious peepers! Press the Ctrl and f key. A find box will open. This picture shows it on the left side of the screen; yours might be on the right side.  You can look for the highlighted text or click on Next.

  • There are so many Skipped barcodes to find!
Copy and paste the 'Accounted For' items before, the skipped barcode and the "Accounted For"  item after. Then paste into a document to create a to-do list of books to go back and find! Copy all of the title/copy information so the book can be located on the shelf.

End of year - Circulation - "Ceiling Date"

The Ceiling Date overrides the normal due date calculated by Destiny if the ceiling date is earlier than the calculated due date. A ceiling date also overrides any fixed due date.
Some use the last day of school so that all items are due on the last day of school, no matter what their calculated due date would be. Others want all items back in the library sooner.
Make sure to change this date each year. Destiny increments the year if needed, but the date may not be correct for your school year. It might fall on the wrong day of the week.
To change the ceiling date: Back Office>Library Policies. Destiny opens on Patron Type. This will be the easiest location for you to use because most libraries have fewer patron types than circulation types. Change the Ceiling Date for each Patron Type and Save.
NOTE: Once past the Ceiling Date, Destiny reverts to regular circulation parameters, like Faculty can check out books for 30 days.

Library Data Wall

I was in a building last week and saw an interesting Library Data Center display. The librarian printed reports for Top Homerooms, Top Patrons, New Books, Database Use and ‘What Students and Teachers are Reading’.
Here’s the ‘rest of the story’…since displaying the information about the Top Homerooms, the teachers with lower circulation numbers have made a point of having their students go to the library  to check out more books!
Most of these reports can be created and printed from circulation. I’d be happy to help you create and print any of them.

Five Systems search in Destiny

Your teachers can now search Five Systems using Follett Destiny One Search. They can NOT place orders for themselves because they do not have an account with Five Systems. They can look for books in other public schools and ask the library to request them.
