Weeding in Destiny

If you have weeding to do, it is easy to scan barcodes in Back Office>Update Copies. Pile the books onto a cart and scan.

Maybe you will find a book to submit to http://awfullibrarybooks.net/ like these beauties.

Friday Fun: Blind Date with a Book

Librarian Janet Clarke-Hazlett had books wrapped in plain brown paper and tagged with words. Students were encouraged to have a “blind date with a book”. After all, you can’t judge a book by its cover! Janet said the promotion had books being checked out in record numbers. She will be rewarded with a big tote bag from Baker + Taylor.
If you have a cool project to share - this is the place!

Destiny Homepage

Wouldn’t it be nice if your Destiny Home Page was a true 24/7 landing page for your students with all your library resources beautifully displayed? Well, now it can be. If you have a district library page or other site where you maintain all your library resources, we will show you how to embed that site so Destiny becomes a comprehensive virtual library that will meet the information needs of today’s students. Don’t have an existing site? We can offer ways to create a dynamic web page using Web 2.0 tools that will allow you to showcase your library program and its resources.

Sign up TODAY for the workshop tomorrow! Thursday, October 24th at 3:45 in Lab A at the CaTS building. Reply to this email or contact Patti Rose to enroll.

 Stone TP? Ewwwwww.

How’s One Search working?

The new NovelNY databases were added to your Destiny One Search. Well…except for the Gannett Newspapers. Destiny doesn’t like that one...

For elementary and middle school libraries, Kids InfoBits (Gale) and eLibrary Elementary (Proquest) were added to the already configured Grolier databases. The Grolier ones are Amazing Animals, America the Beautiful, Encyclopedia Americana, Multimedia Encyclopedia, Lands & People, New Book of Knowledge, New Book of Popular Science, and La Nueva Enclopedia Cumbre.
High schools had Opposing Viewpoints in Context added from NOVELNY. Gale provided the nicely priced bundle of Biography in Context, Science in Context, U.S. History in Context and World History in Context. These are also set up in Destiny One Search.

If you’d like to learn about  NOVELNY databases come to an afterschool workshop this Thursday (10/17/13) at 3:45 at CaTS. Please reply to this email or contact Patti Rose to enroll.

Altered Book Project

Susan Kagel, art teacher at Churchville Middle School North took recycling to a new level. The project had students research a “place” and type a one page paper.  Then they had to create an altered book on their chosen place and write an accompanying artist statement about their project. The books they altered were books removed from the library collection.  The projects are displayed in the library.  Thanks to Susan Kagel and Susan Meck for sharing this project. They will each receive a copy of the Reuse, Recycle, Read poster.

Fed Gov shutdown affecting Destiny One Search + WebPath Express Results

Due to the Government shutdown, Destiny has a few  translators that are already  affected. This will affect One Search and the results displayed when adding a title to your catalog since LOC is programmed into your  Z39.50 results.

Library of Congress
 NASA
 ERIC

There are a few more government sites likely to be affected, but as of now they are returning results in One Search.  However, this could change in the next several hours or overnight

Please also note that any government websites in WebPath Express will likely be affected.  After the  nightly checker tonight, we will have a better idea of the number of affected websites in WebPath Express in the morning.

October means BEDS statistics

Here's a video about getting BEDS information from Destiny - print materials. Jim sent information about eBooks and databases in his latest Weekly Update.
